Leadership Effectiveness | Why It Should Matter To You

The Competition for College Admissions
There are over 35,000 high schools in the United States alone. Which means each June, over 35,000 valedictorians graduate and head to college. Add to that 35,000 more salutatorians. You’d think they’d all end up attending an Ivy League university or a top-tier college, right? After all, they are the cream of the crop. But that doesn’t happen.
It’s mathematically impossible for all of them to be accepted by the top schools. In a previous report, Forbes revealed that the top 25 schools in their list admitted a total of 20,900 freshmen.
That’s actually great news for you, even if you don’t rank at the very top of your class. Because your outstanding leadership will not only level the playing field — it can also tilt it in your favor.
Why Leadership Matters
That is why out of school leadership matters throughout your high school career. The inspiration that can change your future direction isn’t necessarily inside the walls of your high school. That’s where every other student is looking for leadership.
If you want to be noticed and you want to find out what you’re made of, take a different route. Leave school behind once the bell rings. Find something that fascinates you where you can hone your leadership skills. Then you will stand out to your friends and to the people you meet on your way up. Most of all, you will catch the interest of college admissions officers.
Now, let’s have a reality check. Under average grades and scores are rarely outweighed by leadership. So you should still strive to get the best grades and scores. But I can tell you that exceptional and creative leadership can get you ahead. I have known students who had gotten into eminent colleges because of this.
How To Be An Effective Leader
You now know the role that leadership plays in your college application. But what is leadership if it is not effective? If you want to be an effective leader, here are the steps that you should take:
1. Learn from Great Leaders
One of the best ways to master leadership effectiveness is to find a good mentor. Observe their characteristics and how they lead. Then apply what you learn. When you’re surrounded by people who are smarter than you, learning becomes a constant.
2. Build your Credibility
It takes a good amount of practice and experience to become an effective leader. Train yourself to set goals and come up with a workable action plan to achieve them. But make sure that you follow through.
3. Admit your Mistakes
Don’t be afraid to admit when you have done something wrong. This will take away any fear of failure you have. And people will recognize you as a leader who is not afraid to own up and be held accountable.
4. Be Selfless in Serving
Servant leadership is one of the leadership traits you should never overlook. An effective leader always leads by action. And you can do this by showing that you can also take on the dirty work when needed. With that said, you should also be able to delegate tasks wisely.
5. Don’t Take Yourself too Seriously
Training yourself for maximum leadership effectiveness is hard work. But it doesn’t mean you should deprive yourself of fun. While you’re learning, enjoy the process. Then you’ll have fond memories to recall when you recount this experience on your college application.
An effective leader can influence others positively. And they can do it even in the simplest ways. Check out this TED-Ed video and learn the value of everyday leadership:
